About

Welcome To Illinois Heart Rescue

Survival Rates

The Illinois Heart Rescue project is funded by a five-year grant from the Medtronic Foundation with the goal of substantially  increasing survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest throughout the country.  Illinois is the newest state to join the Heart Rescue network, bringing the total to eight.   ILHR has a full-time Project Director, and a Data Manager.   The remainder of the team are all volunteers that are dedicated to improving outcomes.  The team includes doctors, nurses, students and healthcare professionals, all with a passion to create a system of care that strengthens the links in a chain of survival.

The Chain of Survival

Other regions have increased their survival rates (most notably, Milwaukee, WI and Seattle, WA) by primarily focusing on educating and training residents on the importance of bystander CPR.  In Seattle, for instance, it is estimated that half of their citizens have been trained how to provide CPR.  The other links in the chain of survival include pre-hospital first responders, through the hospital and ends with survivors supporting each other.

Bystander CPR

A significant early effort for the project will be mobilizing community-based organizations, healthcare providers and high school students to train as many citizens in the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois in bystander CPR.

Prehospital

We will be educating EMS first responders and 911 dispatchers the importance of the new guidelines for Incident Command (i.e., “stay and play”).   In addition, we will be building a data network in order to collect better information about where SCA occurs, if bystanders were involved and whether the person survived and was neurologically intact post-arrest.

Hospital

Illinois Heart Rescue will facilitate a consistent approach throughout Illinois hospitals for the treatment of SCA including hypothermia after SCA, recommendations for creating a code SCA team and neurological assessment with guidelines for assessing return of neurological functioning.

Survivor's Network & Advocacy

We hear incredible stories just about every week about individuals having an SCA and being fortunate to have had people around them that knew just what to do. Those survivors are excited and passionate about sharing their stories to offer inspiration for others to get trained in basic bystander CPR. Additionally, all of us are advocates for changes in legislation and training for police, fire and in high schools so that we “pay it forward”.
